Welcome to the Art Sales "Starter Kit" Class

Welcome! I'm so glad your here! Thank you!

I think you are here because:
1. You're creative.

2. You've worked hard at improving your art skills.

3. You've been getting positive feedback from your fellow artists, your instructors and friends and now you're ready to get your art out into the larger world.

Feedback and recognition from people outside of your immediate circle is fuel for improvement and artistic growth. And when the feedback and recognition comes in the form of money, it's a wonderful feeling.

I'm here for 2 reasons.

1.  I'm here to help you take the first steps towards the recognition and feedback that can lead to sales of your art.

Sales of your artwork creates enthusiasm. Enthusiasm leads to more creative work, which leads to becoming a better artist, and that leads to more sales and so on and so on.  It's a wonderful upward spiraling thing.

2.  I'm also here because I see the need for this kind of a "starter class".

There are a number of classes, programs, blogs and websites that help artists with their careers.  There are some very good ones and I have participated in several. At their core they are designed for artists who want fulltime art careers. And not every artist wants that. Many artists are content with creating art as a sideline.  If they are able to sell some of it great! And if that eventually leads to a fulltime or second career, wonderful.

If that's what you want and are ready to get started you're going to need to be able to do 3 things.
  • Show your art
  • Talk about your art
  • Express gratitude

Get ready for show and tell.

If your grade school had a Show-and-Tell day, you probably thought it was something cool and fun to do.  But it had a larger purpose. It was the start of developing your speaking and leadership skills. As a child it was an easy and natural thing to do.

It's time to learn the artist version of Show-and-Tell.  Thank goodness we are in the age of social media!

This new age of "It's totally okay to talk about yourself" (and even brag) makes it easy.

Let's get started!

But first some answers to some questions you might have.

Q. Do I really have to sell my work to become a better artist?
A. No. I do not think it is absolutely essential to sell your work to become a better artist. You might choose to donate or give away your work. You might want to put your art piece in a show with NFS (not for sale) on the tag. Great! But, I think you should approach your donations and gifts with the same attitude that you would use to sell your work.  Understand the energy and time you put into creating your art work and understand it's value before you donate or gift it.

Q. What if I'm not sure my art is ready to sell?
A. Drop that question like a hot potato. We're not even going there!
  • Have you ever heard a fellow art student tell someone they sold a certain painting and you think to yourself, "really? that one? the one with the lumpy apples (or whatever)?"
  • Have you ever been in a museum and thought to yourself, "is this really good art?"
  • Have you ever been in a gallery and thought to yourself, "they're asking HOW MUCH for that painting?"
When you create your art you put energy and vibration into it. Somewhere, in this universe, that vibe will resonate with someone.  But first someone has to see it.

Q. What if I have questions or don't understand something in these lessons?
A. If they are questions about the fundamental steps I'm giving you, I'll do my best to answer.  Leave your questions in the comment box below the lesson or tutorial.

Q. The idea of "selling" makes me feel icky!
A. I'm going to address that right at the start of Lesson One.

Are you excited? I hope you are.
It's going to take a little work but you can totally do it.

Onward and upward!

hugs,
Maggie
