Instagram is great for artists because it is 100% visual. Every post has to have an image of some kind. It can be a photo or a photo with text or a graphic design. Instagram is owned by Facebook.
You use Instagram in a slightly different way than you use Facebook. You post a variety of images and content (use the social media prompts). Instagram is more hip and trendy. You can follow anyone who's account is not private. You do not have to request a relationship.
Do not make your Instagram account private. Like Facebook, Instagram has special features for business accounts.
Use it for establishing yourself as an artist or any other passion you have.
Instagram is used by companies, photographers, actors, artists and others to give people a behind the scenes and up close look at their lives and work.
On Instagram you have followers rather than friends.
You gather followers who want to learn more about you and your passions. You follow other people you want to learn more about. !!!You don't tell people the check out line at the Publix was so long you left.!!!!
You don't gain followers by being boring.
Instagram is more about making new connections rather than reconnecting with long lost friends and family.
You make new connections by showing beautiful images, sharing inspiring quotes, by making people happy.
New connections find you through your beautiful Images and your hashtags.
Engagement (comments and likes) is important on Instagram.
Leave nice comments on the posts of people you follow.
If someone leaves you a comment, reply to that comment and like the comment.
Unlike Facebook, Instagram is searchable.

You help others find you and your work by using appropriate Hashtags #####
The use of hashtags is an important part of gaining followers. Hashtags categorize content making it easy for people to find posts and information they are looking for.
Your hashtags should relate to your location, your subject matter and materials
Here are some hashtags I often use;
#keywest #keywestartist #maggieruleypainting #acyrlicpainting #art #artclass #artgallery

Sep 30, 2017 - Hashtags are words or multi-word phrases preceded by the # symbol, such as #picoftheday or #sweepstakes. People can search for posts with a specific hashtag, so they are used to categorize content and track topics on Twitter and other social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest
Your hashtags should relate to your content, otherwise it's considered spam.
Your hashtags should contain words about your materials, your inspiration, your location, your subject matter.

There is a lot of information online about Instagram hashtag usage.
Copy and paste what's below into Google for a ton of information:
"How to use hashtags on Instagram"
Here is an excellent article;
how to promote your art on Instagram
Pro tip! When you post don't put a ton of hashtags in the description.
Add a comment on your post and put the hashtags there. Say something else about your post then put a few lines of dots.
.
.
.
#keywestartist
and then write your hashtags. That way the hashtags aren't visual and obnoxious, but they will still be part of your post. You are allowed to use 30 hashtags per post.

Emojis are also used for fun and color on Instagram. Insert them in your descriptions and comments.
Remember:
What to say in your Instagram comments:
Tell about your art experiences in classes and workshops. #keepitshort
Answer questions you've been asked, such as, "Have you always been an artist?" Did you go to art school? etc.
Talk about which artists have inspired you, where you find inspiration.
Tip: keep it short and casual, like a conversation. If it gets to long viewers will have to press the *read more* link and they very often don't. Any important info should be given first. However, if you have a lot to say on a certain occasion by all means, say it. I've seen long passionate posts get tons of response.
What to show:
Show Images of
- The painting, remember to crop out the crap :D
- The painting on the easel
- You in a class or workshop, or the classroom with all the students.
- You in an art discussion group, such as a critique
- Your materials
- Your outdoor gear, your outdoor gear after the wind has knocked it down.
- You with customers
- Sold work hanging in customers' homes
- You receiving a prize, other artists receiving a prize. It's good to share the love.
