I have 4 social media accounts
I've been an active Facebook user for years. I've had an Instagram account for years, but have only used it regularly since it was acquired by Facebook.
I rarely add content of my own to Pinterest. I use it more as a search engine. Because it is a search engine, it has huge potential for exposure for its users. However, there is a reality as to how much time I can spend on social media and accomplish the other things I want to do.
My Twitter account is pretty much abandoned. I don't think my art buyers are on Twitter looking for art.
It's my goal to post to Facebook and Instagram every day. It doesn't always happen. The world's not going to come to an end if I miss 2 or 3 days. And people aren't going to miss not hearing from me for a day or two.
I pay attention to the shifts in the platforms.
Some facts
I've had more sales from Facebook than I've had from people emailing me saying, "Hey, I found your website and would like to buy such and such a painting."
I've had more sales from my personal outreach efforts, post card mailings, email announcements and shows, than I've had through Facebook.
I've had requests for information about the availability of my work on Instagram, but no sales, yet.
How I Post
I have an alert set in the calendar of my phone for everyday at 11:30. It says "post to Facebook". If I have something ready to post great, if not I give it a couple of minutes thought. If I can't think of anything I let it go.
Some days I post to Instagram, some days to Facebook, whichever feels right.
If I post to Instagram I usually share it to my Facebook page. I only put one or two hashtags in the description of the post. I comment on my own Instagram posts and put most of my hashtags in that comment.
When I post to my Facebook page I usually share it to my personal profile, either immediately or later in the same day. I always add more where it asks you to "say something about this", because if you don't all the important information is at the bottom.
I use Facebook and Instagram to tell short stories, share inspiration and position myself as an artist.
Occasionally I'll direct people to my website if there is a reason. Such as a seasonal sale, or new work added etc.
I do my best to reply to all comments, even if it's a simple thanks or an emoji.
I don't use any software to automatically post for me and I don't schedule posts for the future.
I stay off of Facebook when something negative is happening or has just happened. #thepostelectionshitstorm
Why?
If some huge tragedy has struck someone, or someplace, I want to be respectful and let everybody have their say about the event. It's not the time to talk about myself. If an event is ongoing, then in a day or two I get back to my schedule.
What I think I could do better
- I could update and promote my Facebook page store section more. #giveitsomeluv
- I could be a little more aggressive with my sales promotions on my page.
- I could check into my personal timeline everyday so it doesn't take me hours to catch up. (Or I could stop feeling guilty about it)
- I could reply faster to my Facebook page messages.
- I could get a better camera.
Note:
This is how I do it, you can take an entirely different approach. Do it in a way that feels natural and fun. That's what your friends and fans and followers want.
